DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE: WITH THE DOUCET BROTHERS, ORIGINAL LIBERTY JAZZ BAND, AND TOPSY CHAPMAN

The Mississippi River runs from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico passing through rural forests, Iowa farm country, petrochemical coasts and major cities. In the process, the river water goes from crystal clear to muddy. River cities St. Louis, Memphis and New Orleans have produced great cultural icons in jazz, blues, gospel, rockabilly, roots rock and soul and many other music styles near its banks and levees. Join us for "Down by the Riverside" a live American Routes concert with artists from the cafe au lait portion of the river and its connected watershed of bayous and backswamps in French south Louisiana, including: Cajun brothers Michael and David Doucet; the calliope-playing captain of the Natchez steamboat, Clarke "Doc" Hawley; and Dr. Michael White’s Original Liberty Jazz Band playing New Orleans traditional jazz, joined by Bourbon Street singer Topsy Chapman. The program begins with Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe elder and canoe builder Wayne Valliere speaking of the significance of the Father of Waters to Native Americans.

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE WITH SUMMER SOUNDS FROM FRENCH QUARTER FEST

This week, we celebrate the cultural minglings in New Orleans with a visit to the 2019 French Quarter Festival: a free, homegrown, four-day annual event featuring a vast array of local music presented on stages throughout the city's oldest neighborhood. We'll hear from Soul Queen Irma Thomas, the late piano patriarch Ellis Marsalis, and the Preservation Hall Brass Band. We'll also catch the French-Creole jazz of Don Vappie and Evan Christopher, Cajun dance music from Bruce Daigrepont, vaudeville and gospel from Topsy Chapman and Solid Harmony, Klezmer-funk fusion from the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars and traditional jazz from Dejan's Olympia Brass Band. The Festival plans its return for April 2021. _Photo by Zack Smith Photography, Courtesy of French Quarter Festivals, Inc._

A FRENCH QUARTER FOURTH 2019

This Independence Day weekend, we celebrate the cultural minglings in New Orleans, the city whose unparalleled diversity gave birth to some of the most revolutionary sounds in American music. We visit New Orleans' French Quarter Festival: a free, homegrown, four-day annual event featuring a vast array of local music presented on stages throughout the city's oldest neighborhood. We'll hear from Soul Queen Irma Thomas, piano patriarch Ellis Marsalis, and the Preservation Hall Brass Band. Join the festivities with this holiday display of musical fireworks.

NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVALS OF NOW AND YORE: SONNY ROLLINS, MCCOY TYNER, HERLIN RILEY, CELIA CRUZ, LEE KONITZ, TOPSY CHAPMAN & MORE

This week on American Routes, we're celebrating the 47th annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival with songs and interviews from the performers that make the festival happen. We hear from longtime local favorites, like chanteuse Topsy Chapman and funk drummer Herlin Riley... as well as perennial visitors and jazz titans, McCoy Tyner and Sonny Rollins. We'll delve into the archives to remember the late Cuban songstress Celia Cruz... and revisit our interview with saxophonist Lee Konitz, who is making his Jazz Fest premier in 2017.

THE BEST OF AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE IN STUDIO AND ON STAGE

This holiday weekend, we've hand picked some of the best live performances on American Routes. We feature blues harpist Charlie Musselwhite, Baton Rouge blues pianist, Henry Gray, New Orleans traditional jazz clarinetist Dr. Michael White and Topsy Chapman. Plus the Cajun band Beausoleil and zydeco accordionist Geno Delafose. And, from the Smithsonian Folklife Festival: Los Texmaniacs and the Chuck Brown Go-Go band. So, turn on the radio and take a break from work (just two hours) for American Routes!

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE!: MUSICAL GEOGRAPHIES OF THE GULF SOUTH

American Routes celebrates music and musicians from New Orleans, Mississippi and French Louisiana. Recorded live at New Orleans' venerable (1906) Civic Theatre, the show features New Orleans clarinetist Dr. Michael White and the Original Liberty Jazz Band with the definitive Creole music born in the Crescent City: traditional jazz. White is joined by fellow NEA Heritage recipient, Cajun fiddler Michael Doucet and the influential band of the French Louisiana cultural revival BeauSoleil ('good sunshine'). The downhome blues of guitarist and wordslinger Little Freddie King of McComb, Mississippi kicks off the show and the spirit-filled gospel of Electrifying Crown Seekers from New Orleans' West Bank take us home. Our special guest is beloved jazz vocalist Topsy Chapman, also famed locally as the first black cocktail waitress on Bourbon Street in the 1960s.
