EPISODES OF AMERICAN ROUTES WITH NEVILLE BROTHERS
CLUB HOPPING II
Come along for a jaunt around New Orleans, in this archive edition of American Routes, as we visit great nightclubs and tune in to live local music over two decades. We visit the legendary Tipitina's, an Uptown institution that showcased homegrown talent like Professor Longhair, James Booker, Dr. John, and the Neville Brothers, and is now run by the funk band Galactic. Then, a visit to the long-closed Donna's Bar & Grille in the French Quarter, where clarinetist Evan Christopher and piano player Tom McDermott made waves with their unique blend of New Orleans, Caribbean, and classical music. Plus a recipe for a classic New Orleans cocktail, the Sazerac, and music for late night parties or hangover mornings.
FAMILY GROOVE: REMEMBERING ART NEVILLE
We remember lost heroes of New Orleans music, beginning with Art Neville, founding member of The Meters and the Neville Brothers, who passed away at age 81 on July 22, 2019. We pay tribute to Art by revisiting our interviews with him and his brothers over the years, as the Nevilles tell stories of family life and their adventures in and beyond the city where they learned their craft. Then, we remember the late Fats Domino with our favorite of the New Orleans piano man's Imperial releases. And we hear the Fat Man's reflective side in a rare 2007 conversation with him about escaping Hurricane Katrina's flood waters and how his faith saw him through. Veteran blues harp player Billy "Boy" Arnold tells of South Side Chicago's early rhythm & blues scene, recording with Bo Diddley, and his view of Fats Domino's role in pushing black music across the color line.
FAMILY GROOVE: REMEMBERING CHARLES NEVILLE... AND HIS BROTHERS FROM NEW ORLEANS
New Orleans' Neville Brothers--Art, Aaron, Charles and Cyril--are famed for their fiery soul and funk, blues and ballads, Caribbean and Crescent City rhythms. Saxophonist Charles Neville recently passed away. He first learned to play music in the family's uptown Valence Street neighborhood, and quickly took to the stage. By 15 Charles was with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and later Bobby Blue Bland, B.B. King and Big Maybelle, among others, touring the Jim Crow South. A drug habit landed the sax player in Louisiana's infamous Angola Penitentiary from 1963 to 1966. It was a reforming and learning experience for him, playing bebop jazz with other inmates and integrating prison bands. In the seventies, Charles and his siblings formed the Wild Tchoupitoulas and then the Neville Brothers, bands that blended the homegrown sounds of New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians and street life with modern soul, funk and jazz. We pay tribute to Charles by revisiting our interviews with him and his brothers over the years, as the Nevilles tell stories of family life and their adventures in and beyond the city where they learned their craft.
REMEMBERING ALLEN TOUSSAINT: A SAINT FOR ALL SEASONS
We celebrate the songmaker, piano "professor" and producer from New Orleans who passed away suddenly in November 2015. A beloved Creole gentleman, Allen Toussaint was a hometown hero and giant on the American music scene. He wrote over 800 songs and produced regional and national hit records such as "Java" (Al Hirt), "Mother-in-Law" (Ernie K-Doe), "I Like it Like That" (Chris Kenner), "It's Raining" (Irma Thomas), "Yes We Can" (Lee Dorsey) among others. Toussaint worked closely with the Meters, Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello. He is in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and received the National Medal of Arts. Allen Toussaint's famed autobiographical song is "Southern Nights."
COSMIC SAXOPHONES: CHARLES NEVILLE AND CHARLES LLOYD
This week on American Routes, we give voice to the saxophone-an instrument revered by everyone from free jazzmen like Charles Lloyd to soul rocker Charles Neville, of the Neville Brothers. New Orleanian Charles Neville tells us how music carried him through his family, his neighborhood and a segregated South. Charles Lloyd, a real California dreamer, traces the roots of his modern, free style and musical collaborations back to the blues of Memphis. From the archives we hear words and music of saxophone honker Sam Butera (Louis Prima), bebopper Sonny Rollins and modernist Yusef Lateef; plus recordings from Sidney Bechet, Lester Young, Louis Jordan, John Coltrane and King Curtis.

FIRE & WATER: THE NEVILLE BROTHERS & HERBIE HANCOCK
Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock joins us to talk about keeping his hardcore jazz credentials while breaking the pop barrier with "Watermelon Man." Hancock recalls famous associations with Miles and more, including those on his River: the Joni Letters, a collection of Joni Mitchell tunes. Plus the four faces of New Orleans' Mount Rushmore -- Art, Aaron, Charles and Cyril -- the Neville Brothers. Since 1954, when Brother Art hit with the ultimate carnival classic "Mardi Gras Mambo," the Nevilles have been on the scene, solo or as a group. We'll hear their legacy of soul, funk and R & B as the brothers tell us how it all came to pass, and how the legacy lives on in the next generation.
