MUSICAL STARS AND CULTURAL STRIPES: AMERICAN ROOTS INDEPENDENCE DAY REVISITED

It's Fourth of July, and we dig into the archives for the roots of American Routes. It all began with a series of Independence Day concerts held annually at the Washington Monument before the fireworks show on the National Mall and featured the best of American vernacular musical culture. We'll sample from nearly a decade's worth of concerts, highlighting spectacular stage performances by the Staple Singers, Tito Puente, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, New Orleans Tuxedo Brass and more. It's Musical Stars & Cultural Stripes: American Roots Independence Day Revisited.

SANTANA SPEAKS: WITH CELIA CRUZ, TITO PUENTE AND LOS LOBOS

Carlos Santana speaks about playing music from the streets of Tijuana to the stage at Woodstock, launching his career in San Francisco, and his hopes for a global society explored on his album Africa Speaks. We'll hear from the late Tito Puente, el Rey de los Timbales, who tells about the roots of tropical Latin jazz in Spanish Harlem and how he brought his instrument, the timbales, to the foreground by moving them from the back to the front of the stage. Steve Berlin and Cesar Rosas from Los Lobos talk about their mix of American pop and Mexican traditions, and we remember Celia Cruz, la Reina de Cuba, who we spoke to in 2001 about her musical beginnings in her beloved homeland, Cuba.

TIMEKEEPERS: THE ART OF DRUMMING WITH JM VAN EATON, ZIGABOO MODELISTE, TITO PUENTE, BEN RILEY AND SHANNON POWELL

This week on American Routes, we're keeping the beat with drummers and rhythm makers across the genres: everyone from Sun Records' Rockabilly drummer JM Van Eaton, to jazz percussionist Ben Riley, who had to keep up with the unconventional rhythms of Thelonious Monk. In between, we listen live in-studio to New Orleans' King of Treme, Shannon Powell, whose music takes us from the church to the streets and beyond. The funky backbone of The Meters, Joseph "Ziggy" Modeliste tells us what it really means to hit a groove, and we'll play an encore presentation of our interview with New York City percussionist, Tito Puente, El Rey de los Timbales.

LATIN TINGE: TITO PUENTE AND NATI CANO

For National Hispanic Heritage Month, we're celebrating the "Latin tinge" in American music. We'll hear a classic interview with the late Nuyorican bandleader and King of the Timbales, Tito Puente, who tells us about the roots of tropical Latin jazz in Spanish Harlem. Then, it's off to the West Coast, where we visit the Los Angeles club of the late, great bandleader Nati Cano. As leader of Mariachi Los Camperos, Nati Cano was a central figure in the Mexican Mariachi scene of East LA. All this, plus music from Dizzy Gillespie, Lalo Guerrero, Los Lobos, Buena Vista Social Club, Freddy Fender, Professor Longhair and more.

TITO PUENTE / MARC & ANN SAVOY

On this American Routes, music, songs, and artists that transcend their own cultural boundaries. Marc and Ann Savoy, a husband and wife team from Eunice, Louisiana, started playing together over 30 years ago and have helped Cajun music spread around the world. Plus legendary timbale player and bandleader Tito Puente, who brought even more of a Latin tinge to the American scene - our interview with him before he passed away in 2000. With music from Nina Simone, Wilco, Super Chikan and more.

THE 20TH CENTURY'S GREATEST

American Routes asked some of today's top artists their favorite songs of the 20th century. Travel through the past hundred years of music with requests from Randy Newman, Tito Puente, Gillian Welch, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, and more.

MARC AND ANN SAVOY / TITO PUENTE

The Cajun music of Marc and Ann Savoy, a husband and wife team from Eunice, Louisiana. We talk with the Savoys about the significance of music -- and chickens -- in their lives. And remembering Tito Puente, who passed away this year.

MILLENNIAL ROUTES

Now that the Y2K dust has settled we'll take a relaxed look back at our favorite American Routes music from the 20th century--and try to imagine what the 21st century will bring. Of course you'll hear Armstrong, Gershwin, Ellington, Dylan, and Hendrix along with Aretha, Patsy Cline, Jerry Lee Lewis and Tito Puente. How about Dewey Balfa, Clifton Chenier, Professor Longhair, and Flaco Jimenez. By the way January 8 is Elvis' birthday!

MILLENIUM / ARTISTS' PICKS

Time to ring in a new century by examining the past one. For the big Y2K, we'll reel in the years with our favorite artists' favorite songs of the millennium. Travel through the past thousand years of music with personal requests from many of our party guests including: Randy Newman, B.B. King, Allen Toussaint, Tito Puente, Gillian Welch, Bobby 'Blue' Bland, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, and more!

LATIN TINGE

Legends of Latin music: Tito Puente and Nati Cano. We visit with these great bandleaders and musicians in New York and Los Angeles respectively to hear about the roots of tropical Latin jazz in Spanish Harlem and the Mexican mariachi scene of East L.A.
