MUSIC AND WORDS OF WISDOM: A CORONA STRAY FROM HOME COMPANION, VOL. 3

We walk the line of isolation and go outside carefully with music and words of wisdom for contemplation, comfort and hope. It's a Corona Stray from Home Companion, in conversations with a few of our favorite artists including Tejano accordionist Flaco Jimenez and the late Ray Charles -- both speaking of their families' role in helping them emerge as great musical citizens. We harken to the creative wisdom of jazz, locally and globally, with the late pianist Dave Brubeck whose travels abroad as a soldier and later with Louis Armstrong lead him to "Take Five" and other worldly sounds. And we take to the streets with New Orleans Original Pinettes Brass Band, the first such women's jazz ensemble today. Plus: music from Bob Dylan, Nina Simone and John Prine.

ROCKIN' BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN: TO RUSSIA WITH LOVE

During the Cold War, the U.S. State Department started sending jazz musicians overseas with the tactical aim of using their hot licks to thaw relations with Eastern Bloc countries. Jazz great Dave Brubeck recalls how Louis Armstrong, a.k.a. "Ambassador Satch," won international hearts and minds with his trumpet. Band member Arvell Shaw saw Armstrong literally disarm Russian guards in East Berlin. Meanwhile, fear of nuclear war with the Soviets infiltrated American popular consciousness resulting in gospel, bluegrass and pop odes to and protests against atomic weapons. In the Sixties, the airwaves were dominated by rock'n'roll, which pirate radio stations and the Armed Forces Network piped across the Iron Curtain. AFN soldier/deejay Rik De Lisle tells about spinning tunes that helped destabilize the Berlin Wall, and Hungarian diplomat/rock guitarist Andras Simonyi and Russian musician Stas Namin talk about life in the Soviet sphere and the cultural revolution sparked by the Beatles, Traffic and Jimi Hendrix.

COOL IVORIES: TOM WAITS & DAVE BRUBECK

In which we visit with two pianists and men of music--each eccentric in his own right. Since the early '70s, singer, songwriter and piano player Tom Waits has gone from anachronistic barfly and lounge singer to avant-vernacular iconoclast. Twentieth century jazz legend Dave Brubeck made his name by using odd, unconventional time signatures back when jazz was for dancing. And we radiate the 88s with some of the best piano music around.

COOL II

"Cool"--it's one of those words that's difficult to define, but you know it when you hear it. Join us as some of our favorite folks expound on the meaning of "cool," and play some really cool music--Tom Waits, Dave Brubeck, Solomon Burke, Carol Fran, Dr. John and lots more. Plus, there's interviews with a couple of guys that definitely fit the cool criteria: "In Crowd" member and pianist Ramsey Lewis, and alto saxophonist Lee Konitz.
