FROM THE SHOW: AMERICAN GOTHIC: JOLIE HOLLAND & HOMER BAILES

Along with Johnnie on vocals and guitar and Walter on mandolin, Homer Bailes on tenor vocal and fiddle made up the original lineup of the Bailes Brothers, a close harmony group of the '40s and '50s. The Bailes Brothers made their name with morality tales such as "Whiskey is the Devil in Liquid Form," leaving their West Virginia home to help form Shreveport's Louisiana Hayride radio program and eventually becoming cast members of the Grand Ole Opry before disbanding the original group in 1949.

AMERICAN GOTHIC: JOLIE HOLLAND & HOMER BAILES

It's old-time country and folk, as seen from the two very different viewpoints of our guests. Jolie Holland is a young singer-songwriter whose sound incorporates a distinct vision--sometimes dark and somewhat hallucinatory--of blues and country from another era. Homer Bailes is the last remaining member of 1940s country superstar family band the Bailes Brothers. His stern outlook on life, illustrated by songs like "Whiskey is the Devil in Liquid Form," remains unchanged over half a century later.
