From the show "Words and Music" originally aired on August 4th, 2021

FROM THE SHOW: HARD TIMES AND HONKY TONKS: DALE WATSON, GILLIAN WELCH AND DAVID RAWLINGS

From the show "Hard Times and Honky Tonks: Dale Watson, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings" originally aired on February 4th, 2015

FROM THE SHOW: WORDS AND MUSIC

Singer-songwriter Gillian Welch taps the well of downhome sounds to create what she calls "little, tiny rock songs." Here she shares with us her approach to crafting music and what's in her record collection.

FROM THE SHOW: THE SOUNDS OF SOLACE

Though raised in Los Angeles to parents in show business, the Nashville-based singer and songwriter has put out albums of what might be called new-oldtime music with her partner David Rawlings. In the fall of 2001, she talked about the music she'd been listening to since the September 11 attacks, and discusses the meanings inside her own song, "Time (The Revelator)."

FROM THE SHOW: AMERICAN ROUTES GOES TO THE MOVIES

Texas-born musician T-Bone Burnett has played with Bob Dylan and served as a producer with Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, and Gillian Welch. Burnett discusses here his work with the Coen Brothers on the soundtrack for the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. With historic material given new treatments by Ralph Stanley, Emmy Lou Harris, Gillian Welch, Chris Thomas King, and actor Tim Nelson, O Brother gives music the royal treatment in a way rare to Hollywood.

WHO WAS HARRY SMITH?: THE GREAT DELINEATOR AND HIS ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC

Who was Harry Smith? The short answer about the 20th century polymath and hustler might be divined in his legendary 1952 Anthology of American Folk Music, an LP collection of mostly Southern US folk songs from 78rpm records. "The Anthology" established a cult of listening and influenced popular and folk revival artists from John Sebastian and the New Lost City Ramblers to rockers like Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and Beck. We'll talk with Smith biographer John Szwed about Harry's life as an artist, record collector and 1950's bohemian. Then, old and new covers of the Anthology and its B-sides from Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, Gatemouth Brown and Amythyst Kiah.

THE KILLER, THE THRILLER & THE CHILLER: JERRY LEE LEWIS WITH SISTERS LINDA GAIL AND FRANKIE JEAN

From small town Louisiana to Memphis, from hellfire to honky tonk, we trace the meteoric rise, fall and rebound of rocknroll's most wayward son–the late Jerry Lee Lewis. We revisit conversations with the Killer about his hits, his misses and being the last man standing of the "Million Dollar Quartet," which also included Elvis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. Jerry Lee's sister Frankie Jean Lewis, a.k.a. the Chiller, gives us a tour of the family's homestead in Ferriday, LA. Natchez, MS bluesman Hezekiah Early shares memories of Haney's Big House, the Chitlin' Circuit nightclub where underage Jerry Lee sneaked in to hear boogie woogie. Drummer J.M. Van Eaton describes what it was like to record with the Killer during his early Memphis days. Sun Records publicist Barbara Sims recalls the scandal that derailed the pianoman's career. And Linda Gail Lewis, nicknamed the Thriller, tells of her brother's second act as a country star and the string of duets they recorded together, as well as her own career as a pianist and dueting with Van Morrison. Plus, we hear Jerry Lee Lewis's collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, Kris Kristofferson and Gillian Welch, among others. All killer, no filler, this week on American Routes.

SPRING AWAKENING

It's a Spring Awakening, and we've got songs about bunny hops, rockin' robins, and fragrant flowers but also lonely hours, gospel prayers and post apocalyptic dreams. In hopes that the real and surreal can commingle with joy and hope, plus music from Gillian Welch, Stevie Wonder, Bob Wills and Fats Waller. Mural and image by Ranna Zahra McSwain

THE SOUNDS OF SOLACE

Many have sought solace in music since the sadness and conflict of September 11, 2001. American Routes honors veterans of war, fire, and emergency service with music appropriate to the nation's mood on this first anniversary of the tragedy. Merle Haggard, Gillian Welch and American Routes listeners tell us what songs have helped them get through this past year, and timeless songs from John Coltrane, the Carter Family and Jimmy Cliff offer a chance for meditation.
