IT'S "CARNIVAL TIME" IN THE CARIBBEAN, NEW ORLEANS, AND FRENCH LOUISIANA-WITH PROFESSOR LONGHAIR AND A CAST OF THOUSANDS

It's Carnival time in the Latin-influenced world. We'll hear music and celebrations in the Afro Caribbean and Gulf Coast including French Louisiana's courir de Mardi Gras, and a visit to Mardi Gras day in the neighborhood with the Mohawk Hunters, Black masking Indians from Algiers, on New Orleans' West Bank. Then a special tribute to New Orleans' Professor Longhair with fellow pianomen Allen Toussaint, Dr. John and Ellis Marsalis.

WAY DOWN YONDER IN NEW ORLEANS AND BEYOND

We're going "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans," as the 1920s Tin Pan Alley pop song had it. It's one of many songs written about our home place. We'll hear some of those and go beyond to blues and jazz, roots rock and soul, gospel and country, Tejano, zydeco and swamp pop. We offer a diverse mix with Charlie Pride, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Adia Victoria, Aretha Franklin and Louis Armstrong, with sounds ranging from critique to guilty pleasures.

FLYING WITH THE BYRDS & THE BURRITOS ON AMERICAN ROUTES AIRLINES

We get sonically aloft with musical memories of the Byrds and the Flying Burritos Brothers. The Byrds, the fabled folk-rock band known for their vocal harmonies and jangly guitar sound, gained huge fame between 1965-1968. We'll hear music that influenced the Byrds from Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger. Plus conversation with Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers co-founder Chris Hillman about his bluegrass roots, the Byrds' shift toward country music on Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and forming country rock band the Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram Parsons. We'll also find out about songs in the land of love lost and found from Dr. John, Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline and Irma Thomas.

SUMMER SOUNDS-BEING & STAYING COOL

This summer we try to be and stay...cool. Leading our in-crowd is the late pianist and jazz radio host Ramsey Lewis in conversation about blending the blues he heard on the Chicago streets with gospel music from home to create a cool version of jazz. We'll also hear cool words and music from Tom Waits, Dr. John, Aretha Franklin, Albert Murray, and Oscar Brown, Jr. Plus a visit to North Carolina's historic Black Seabreeze Beach.

AFTER THE STORM: KATRINA AT 15

15 years ago the levees failed after Hurricane Katrina and covered 80% of New Orleans in water. The Federal flood left a human and ecological disaster in its wake. We take a look back at the catastrophe, recovery and renewed hope for the culture of the Crescent City with Dr. John, Irma Thomas, the Rebirth Brass Band and Allen Toussaint and archival audio from our first broadcast After the Storm in September 2005. image of Fats Domino's house in the Lower Ninth Ward, four months after Hurricane Katrina, 2005 by Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Then, we look back to post-war England with session guitarist Albert Lee who grew up hearing American music on the radio and eventually crossed the pond to play rock & roll stateside. Plus, we explore the roots of rock with blues harpist Little Walter, western swingers Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys and rockabilly picker Carl Perkins.

REMEMBERING DR. JOHN: THE NIGHT TRIPPER

New Orleans' soulful hoodoo rock and roller and carnivalesque hero Mac Rebennack, better known as Dr. John, passed away on June 6, 2019. Within a day, the city's streets filled with mourners honoring his legacy of high funknology in the verbal, musical and spiritual arts. In our archival interview, Dr. John recalls his early days as a studio guitarist and later the West Coast birth of his mysterious public persona. We also revisit a live performance in 2013 where Mac reminisces about learning to play piano at home from an auntie and hearing his heroes out on the music scene. American Routes is 'the right place" to share these conversations and celebrate the beloved music of our friend, the late legendary Dr. John.

RECORD MAVENS: DAN AUERBACH & JOEL SAVOY TAKE ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Traveling at the speed of 45 RPM, we sink into the record grooves of some of our favorite songs and talk to the studio wizards who produced them. First stop is Nashville, home to Music Row as well as Easy Eye Sound, the recording studio of Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach. We talk with Auerbach about his journey in music, from hearing vinyl on his parents' turntable in Akron, Ohio, to cutting records with some of Nashville's legendary session players. Then we head to French Louisiana to chat with Cajun music maven Joel Savoy of Valcour Records about documenting and expanding the region's traditional sounds. Heading east to the Fertile Crescent of American music and our hometown, we remember New Orleans' Harold Battiste, who started All For One Records--the first African American owned label in the South--and arranged hits for Sam Cooke, Dr. John and Sonny & Cher, among others. Plus, more jukebox gold from Little Anthony & the Imperials, June Carter and the Lovin' Spoonful.

SINGING AND SWINGING THE ELECTION 2008

American Routes gets out the vote with music by, for and of the people. Lend your ears to the democratic process as we bring you music to get you to the polls, from protest songs to patriotic anthems. Dr. John shares his views on the politics of music and the state of the nation while Tennessee Senator and piano man Lamar Alexander tells tales of the campaign trail. Plus, Virginia banjo legend Ralph Stanley reveals a surprising endorsement and presidential candidate El Vez, the Mexican Elvis, stops by to ask for our vote.

AFTER THE STORM X: DOG DAYS OF AUGUST

It's hurricane season on the Gulf Coast. To commemorate it we gather songs made post-Katrina and Rita... as well as some enduring classics. Dr. John makes a soapbox of his piano and speaks out in song against the governmental missteps following our country's greatest unnatural disaster. New Orleans jazz clarinetist Dr. Michael White joins us to talk about his new songs in traditional style made following the loss of his home and musical instruments to the flood. Plus the huge influx of talented outsiders is revealed in interviews with New Yorkers who have, post-storm, become New Orleanians--what brought them to and keeps them in the Crescent City.

NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: R&B, ROOTS ROCK AND SOUL, GOSPEL AND FUNK

Jazz may have been born here, but by the 1950s the music of choice in New Orleans was rhythm & blues. Local talent topped the charts with songs like "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", "The Fat Man" and "Working in the Coalmine". We'll talk to many key figures in New Orleans R&B, from hitmakers like Lloyd Price, Dr. John, and Aaron Neville and producers Allen Toussaint and Harold Battiste, to bandleader Dave Bartholomew and musicians like drummer Earl Palmer. Plus music recorded in New Orleans' legendary J&M Studios by Little Richard, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair, and funk, jazz, pop and soul along the way.

COOL II

"Cool"--it's one of those words that's difficult to define, but you know it when you hear it. Join us as some of our favorite folks expound on the meaning of "cool," and play some really cool music--Tom Waits, Dave Brubeck, Solomon Burke, Carol Fran, Dr. John and lots more. Plus, there's interviews with a couple of guys that definitely fit the cool criteria: "In Crowd" member and pianist Ramsey Lewis, and alto saxophonist Lee Konitz.

Plus a recipe for classic New Orleans cocktail, the Sazerac, and music for late night parties and hangover mornings.

NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: R&B, ROOTS ROCK AND SOUL, GOSPEL AND FUNK

Jazz may have been born here, but by the 1950s the music of choice in New Orleans was rhythm & blues, and local talent topped the charts with songs like "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", "The Fat Man", and "Working in the Coalmine".

OFF THE RECORD

We're digging through our files to bring you great stories and live performances that never made the air! Lost tapes of Bo Diddley, Bonnie Raitt, Ralph Stanley, Dr. John and more. Plus live music cuts from Willie Nelson, the legendary Flatlanders and Cajun teen band Feufollet.

CLUB HOPPING II

Come along for a jaunt around New Orleans, as we visit some great nightclubs and tune in to some live local music. Celebrate 25 years of the legendary Tipitina's, an Uptown institution that showcased homegrown talent like Professor Longhair, James Booker, Dr. John, and the Neville Brothers. Then head over to Donna's Bar & Grille in the French Quarter, where clarinetist Evan Christopher and piano player Tom McDermott are making waves with their unique blend of New Orleans, Caribbean and classical music. Plus a recipe for classic New Orleans cocktail, the Sazerac, and music for late night parties and hangover mornings.

Lost tapes of Bo Diddley, Bonnie Raitt, Ralph Stanley, Dr. John and more. Plus live music cuts from Willie Nelson, the legendary Flatlanders and Cajun teen band Feufollet.

VAMPIRES

As the Hallows approach, find out why New Orleans is the vampire capital of North America. Special guests: Romanian poet and NPR essayist Andrei Codrescu, and native novelist Anne Rice. Potentially frightening musicians like Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Dr. John, and Miles Davis; plus songs such as "That Old Black Magic," "Stones in My Passway," and "Midnight Rambler."

THE COLOR OF MUSIC

We provide this special program with New Orleans hoodoo rock and roller Dr. John as a guest, if you're not in a money-drawing mode, but still want to keep away the bad luck.

WEDDINGS WITH ERNIE K-DOE

For richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health -- renew your vows & celebrate June weddings with New Orleans legend Ernie K-Doe at the Mother-In-Law Lounge. Also matrimonial music by Cab Calloway, Jonathan Richman, and Marilyn Monroe, and the musical couplings of George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, and Dr. John & Rickie Lee Jones.

DR. JOHN

Dr. John trips by the studios to play piano, talk hoodoo and walk on gilded splinters. Also music from honky-tonker Charlie Feathers, jazz clarinetist Don Byron's interpretation of Hendrix, and monkey shines from Big Maybelle.
