THANKSGIVING 2023: WORDS AND MUSIC OF INSPIRATION AND SOLACE IN TROUBLED TIMES

These are contentious times of conflicting emotions surrounding war and peace. This holiday weekend we bring songs and sounds for your consideration, concern, and hopefully solace. We'll hear words and music from Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Mavis Staples and Charles Lloyd. Plus Sacred Steel guitar live at the 2023 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival from the Campbell Brothers.

WAY DOWN YONDER IN NEW ORLEANS AND BEYOND

We're going "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans," as the 1920s Tin Pan Alley pop song had it. It's one of many songs written about our home place. We'll hear some of those and go beyond to blues and jazz, roots rock and soul, gospel and country, Tejano, zydeco and swamp pop. We offer a diverse mix with Charlie Pride, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Adia Victoria, Aretha Franklin and Louis Armstrong, with sounds ranging from critique to guilty pleasures.

FLYING WITH THE BYRDS & THE BURRITOS ON AMERICAN ROUTES AIRLINES

We get sonically aloft with musical memories of the Byrds and the Flying Burritos Brothers. The Byrds, the fabled folk-rock band known for their vocal harmonies and jangly guitar sound, gained huge fame between 1965-1968. We'll hear music that influenced the Byrds from Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger. Plus conversation with Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers co-founder Chris Hillman about his bluegrass roots, the Byrds' shift toward country music on Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and forming country rock band the Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram Parsons. We'll also find out about songs in the land of love lost and found from Dr. John, Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline and Irma Thomas.

WHO WAS HARRY SMITH?: THE GREAT DELINEATOR AND HIS ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC

Who was Harry Smith? The short answer about the 20th century polymath and hustler might be divined in his legendary 1952 Anthology of American Folk Music, an LP collection of mostly Southern US folk songs from 78rpm records. "The Anthology" established a cult of listening and influenced popular and folk revival artists from John Sebastian and the New Lost City Ramblers to rockers like Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and Beck. We'll talk with Smith biographer John Szwed about Harry's life as an artist, record collector and 1950's bohemian. Then, old and new covers of the Anthology and its B-sides from Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, Gatemouth Brown and Amythyst Kiah.

ROCKABILLY RASCAL CHUCK MEAD & HERALDING THE FOLK WITH ALICE GERRARD

Chuck Mead, co-founder of the legendary Nashville country rock band, BR549 tells tales of being born into a Kansas family of musicians with their own radio show and infiltrating his way into a whole new Nashville underground music, bar and dance scene. Then, conversation with Alice Gerrard, musician, advocate for old time music and known for her collaboration with West Virginia native Hazel Dickens as a rare female bluegrass duo in the 1960s. Plus music from Bob Dylan, Wanda Jackson, The Balfa Brothers and Johnny Shines.

EASTER PARADE & PASSOVER: MUSIC FOR HOLY DAYS AND HOLIDAYS

For Easter: a live bluegrass set from Del McCoury from the National Folk Festival and a conversation with Chicago gospel giants the Highway Q.C.'s. We'll give the chocolate rabbits, colored eggs, Jesus and believers their due in songs by Woody Guthrie, the Staple Singers, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Bob Dylan. Plus Passover themes from the Caribbean to New York. Join us for that and our Easter Parade of holiday and holy day hits.

We celebrate epic moments in American music from the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals-from Duke Ellington's 1956 comeback to Bob Dylan's 1965 electric revolution. First, an hour tribute to the Newport Jazz Festival with performances by Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, and a visit from trumpet legend Clark Terry, who played with Ellington in '56. Then, the late festival founder George Wein shares his memories, such as the founding of the Folk Festival in 1959 that featured blues, gospel, country, Cajun and more; and folk singer Joan Baez recalls her Newport experiences. Plus Newport performances from Doc Watson, John Lee Hooker and others.

PET SOUNDS REVISITED: SONGS OF DOGS, CATS, BIRDS & OTHER MOSTLY...BELOVED CREATURES

To many pop music audiophiles, the words "Pet Sounds" might bring to mind the Beach Boys. But for us it means the songs and sounds of our pets and other animal affections. Dogs and cats reign as we take your requests and add our best picks, including a few birds, a mule or two and even monkeys. We'll also visit with an anthropologist whose best friends include primates named Miles, Monk, Bartok, Berg, Coltrane and Stravinsky. Plus music by Bob Dylan, Lightnin' Hopkins, Bonnie Raitt and George Clinton.

GIMME MORE HOPE: RESILIENCE AND IMPROVISATION IN MUSIC, FOOD & DRINK

We're seeking out hope in a cold, dark season with warm conversation and music. We check in on the places in New Orleans that keep us connected, even in these isolating times, from Li'l Dizzy's Cafe in Treme to Pete's Out in the Cold Lounge in the Irish Channel to see how they're faring. Then a round with Joe Krown at the 88s...on wheels, the Piano on a Truck. Plus songs by Bob Dylan, Bessie Smith, Otis Redding, and Dolly Parton.

MUSIC AND WORDS OF WISDOM: A CORONA STRAY FROM HOME COMPANION, VOL. 3

We walk the line of isolation and go outside carefully with music and words of wisdom for contemplation, comfort and hope. It's a Corona Stray from Home Companion, in conversations with a few of our favorite artists including Tejano accordionist Flaco Jimenez and the late Ray Charles -- both speaking of their families' role in helping them emerge as great musical citizens. We harken to the creative wisdom of jazz, locally and globally, with the late pianist Dave Brubeck whose travels abroad as a soldier and later with Louis Armstrong lead him to "Take Five" and other worldly sounds. And we take to the streets with New Orleans Original Pinettes Brass Band, the first such women's jazz ensemble today. Plus: music from Bob Dylan, Nina Simone and John Prine.

ROCK ROUTES AND CAJUN STARDOM: BOZ SCAGGS AND JIMMY C. NEWMAN

We trace stardom back to its source, traversing the roots and routes that led small town musicians to national fame. Pop icon Boz Scaggs and the late Cajun honky-tonk man Jimmy C. Newman took very different paths to the stage but carried with them the sounds they grew up hearing. Boz Scaggs achieved mainstream success with his own platinum records as well as his work with Steve Miller and Duane Allman. We talk to him about his 6+ years performing on the road and how he came into his own by reconnecting with the blues he heard as a kid in "Nowhere, Texas." Then, we remember the late Jimmy C. Newman, who took the sounds of French Louisiana to the Grand Ole Opry and put Cajun music and culture on the map. Son Gary Newman, producer Joel Savoy and musician Kelli Jone tell of his legacy and their tribute album, Farewell, Alligator Man. Plus, we trace Hank Williams' "Jambalaya" back to its Cajun origins, served up with tunes from Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and Professor Longhair.

SONG MAKERS AND SONG TAKERS: WILLIAM BELL AND CHRIS SMITHER

This week on American Routes, we hear from great songwriters and performers- and those who emulate them. Original songs can take on new form and meaning when interpreted by different voices, and we'll hear some of those renditions and transformations this week. We'll hear the rocking Southern sound of the Drive-By Truckers covering Bob Dylan, and Ray Charles doing Hank Williams. Our guest William Bell, from Memphis, will tell us all about his music being played by the Byrds, and bluesman Albert King. And we'll go live on stage in Northampton Massachusetts with folk-blues guitarist Chris Smither for songs and stories.

HOW MANY ROADS: BOB DYLAN'S BACK PAGES VOLUME II

In this second edition of "How Many Roads?" Bob Dylan's Back Pages, we'll rejoin the great American wordsmith by listening to his work from the last 25 years. We won't forget the historic and ancient roots of his modern sounds, from the Old Testament to the Civil Rights movement. We'll hear from collaborators and friends, Mavis Staples and Joan Baez, and from Kris Kristofferson who overheard Dylan's recording sessions while working as a custodian in Nashville. We'll go to our archives for the late producer Jerry Wexler on Dylan's spiritual transformation and hear songs that address outlaws and lovers, memories and mortality.

"HOW MANY ROADS...?" BOB DYLAN'S BACK PAGES

Bob Dylan's songs are part of American consciousness, with sources and symbols drawing from old-time country and folk, blues and ballads, ancient and modern poetry, the beauties and absurdities of life, love and loss. His contributions to the big river of songs have grown and been recognized worldwide. The young man from Hibbing, Minnesota, is now an elder... a Nobel Laureate; but his listeners didn't need that or any such weathervane to prize Bob Dylan. It was, and is, always in his words and voice, music and memory where fans and friends found inspiration. Bob's songs ask questions and seek action. They remain timely in this dark season with a New Year ahead. We hear Dylan's early, classic, rare and more recent recordings along with comments from Joan Baez and filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker ("Don't Look Back"). Also Dylan's music as played by the Byrds and the Band, Stevie Wonder and Nina Simone, Doug Sahm and Sandy Denny. We hope you enjoy listening to this program as much as we did making it.

JEWS & BLUES: JERRY WEXLER AND HENRY SAPOZNIK

Explore the connection between the wail of the cantor and the slide of a blues note-- where jazz and western swing meet the klezmorium. Legendary R&B producer Jerry Wexler recalls working with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and more. Banjo player, and author Henry Sapoznik talks about going from Old Time Country back to the music of his roots, klezmer. Plus jazz-inflected western swing, swinging klezmer and more.

A SONIC SEASON OF LIGHT & EVERGREENS

Our "Sonic Season" includes Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzza and Boxing Day. We celebrate with New Orleans Zion Harmonizers live in our studio. Woody Guthrie sings a Hanukkah song while Bob Dylan tells of "Three Angels." We interview a black Santa about his Christmas days in Vietnam, and Bob Dorough sings "Blue Xmas," the song he wrote for Miles Davis. Meanwhile, life in America goes on... in hopes and dreams that bring light to the darkness...

MAKE AMERICAN ROUTES GREAT AGAIN: STRONGER TOGETHER... IN SONGS AND STORIES

This week on American Routes, we're here to Make American Routes Great Again! Stronger Together... in Songs & Stories. With just a few days left before relief or disbelief in our diverse democracy... we bring you ghosts of elections past and present... And the words of lofty American songmakers Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie, Los Lobos and Bruce Springsteen. We'll give a smidgeon of equal time to politicians from both parties whose sounds take to the podium and the stage: Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander on piano and Tim Kaine from Virginia on harmonica.

LOVERS, BROTHERS AND OTHERS: MAKING SWEET MUSIC TOGETHER

Music made by couples, families and siblings often has a special quality. The same is true of people who have a musical attraction to one another: Lennon and McCartney, or Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew. Country traditionalist and mandolin player Marty Stuart was 12 years old when he met country chanteuse Connie Smith at a road show in his native Mississippi. Decades later Marty and Connie were married. They talk about their spring-fall relationship and making music together as "old souls." We'll talk to Joan Baez about writing for Bob Dylan and her singing his songs. Plus the Black Keys tell us how they teamed up, as did real brothers Trombone Shorty and James Andrews. We'll also hear from the Cajun married duo of Marc and Ann Savoy.

GOING DOWN THE ROAD... WOODY GUTHRIE IN WORDS AND MUSIC

American Routes heralds our nation's greatest roving troubadour and social commentator, Woody Guthrie. We'll visit with friends and relatives who share tales of Guthrie's trials and triumphs, from Okemah, Oklahoma to Coney Island, New York. Guthrie's children, Nora and Arlo, reflect on their father's life, scholar Guy Logsdon discusses Guthrie's Dust Bowl days and Pete Seeger shares the backstory to Woody's anthem for the "down and outers." Plus music and memories from Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Moses Asch, Bob Dylan and so many others.

Tune into music dealing with death and rebirth, loss and resolution, for All Saints and All Souls Days, November 1 and 2. Music transcends the world of the living, as we listen to a jazz funeral for sax player Harold Dejan in the streets of New Orleans. Plus preacher, mortician, and amazing soul singer Solomon Burke tells his tale, and a visit to a local cemetery to see how the dead are honored this time of year. Includes music in the spirit from Pops Staples, King Oliver, Bob Dylan and Ralph Stanley.

NEWPORT JAZZ AND FOLK FESTIVALS

Celebrate epic moments in American music from the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals--from Duke Ellington's 1956 comeback to Bob Dylan's 1965 electric revolution. Mark the 55th anniversary of the Jazz Festival with performances by Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, and a visit from trumpet legend Clark Terry, who played with Ellington in '56. Festival founder George Wein also joins us to share his memories, such as the founding of the Folk Festival in 1959 that featured blues, gospel, country, Cajun and more; and folk singer Joan Baez recalls her Newport experiences. Plus Newport performances from Doc Watson, John Lee Hooker and others.

DIVAS?

What comes to mind when you hear the word Diva? We'll explore the meaning - and the sound - of that feminine term through our music mix, and through interviews with some high-minded women who give the word a good name: Bonnie Raitt, Abbey Lincoln and young chanteuse Norah Jones. Plus songs with men and women weighing in on the topic from Louis Jordan, Memphis Minnie, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone and more.

JEWS & BLUES

Explore the connection between the wail of the cantor and the slide of a blues note--where jazz and western swing meet the klezmorium. Legendary R&B producer Jerry Wexler recalls working with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and more. Banjo player and author Henry Sapoznik talks about going from Old Time Country back to the music of his roots, klezmer. Plus jazz-inflected western swing, swinging klezmer and more.

NEW YORK II: BEAT OF THE BOROUGHS

Head to New York City with American Routes as we search out the beat of the boroughs. Sit in with Seleno Clarke as he hosts a Sunday night Hammond B-3 organ jam at the Harlem American Legion Hall. Pick and grin downtown in Washington Square Park as country comes to the city for a reunion of bluegrass musicians from the 1950s and 60s. Then it's up to the South Bronx to trace Latin music from Mambo to Hip-Hop. Plus music from and about the city from John Coltrane, Bob Dylan and other musicians that called New York home.

VALENTINE'S DAY

In this Valentine's special we explore the various types of love expressed in song--from puppy love to animal attraction, part-time love to enduring love, breaking up and making up and everything in between. We're joined on our quest by three performers well acquainted with the genre: Randy Newman, author of love songs both ironic and authentic; Rev. Al Green, a man who has addressed love both sacred and secular throughout his career; and Joan Baez, who talks about her favorite love songs--some written for her. Plus, an irresistible mix of love songs including Fats Domino, Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and more that you can't help but fall for.
